Classroom Rules
1. Listen to and follow directions 2. Keep your hands, feet, and things to yourself. 3.Have fun!
My approach to discipline and management creates clear expectations for behavior in which the students fully understand the consequences. The policies strive to develop self-discipline and responsibility. It is equally important to reward students with good behavior in order to draw attention to the correct behavior. My responsive classroom is organized to create an inviting, warm atmosphere from the first day of school. An environment that students feel safe to take risks. In all methods of discipline, I use the three R's of responsive classroom discipline. First, remind the student of the classroom responsibility or rule being broken. Second, re-direct the student to the correct behavior.
Third, reprimand the student appropriately. There are various methods I practice to manage student behavior.
Go for the Green!
"Go For the Green!", a Stoplight Management Program, provides a unique way of monitoring daily individual behavior. Each student has a clothespin with his/her name on it which begins each day on the "green light".
Students who are not showing responsibility are first reminded of that responsibility. Another reminder results in the clothespin being moved to the "blue light," in which the student is redirected to the correct behavior. However, if a
student demonstrates behavior that warrants disciplinary action, the clothespin is moved to the "yellow light"
or to the "red light" if the behavior persists. The student will then be reprimanded. This means the student will complete a problem/solution report during snack time about the inappropriate behavior and how it will be improved. This problem/solution report will be sent home to be signed and returned the next day. If the problem/solution report is not returned, or if a clothespin is moved to the red light, then the parent will be contacted by phone. Severe or repeated inappropriate behaviors will result in more severe consequences.
Reach for the Stars
"Reach for the Stars" reinforces individual responsibility in a positive way. Each student has a star with their name on it. This is followed by spaces for five more stars. For each time a student is caught making a positive choice, they
will be asked to add a star to their row. When a student has five stars, they may pick from the prize box. They will then reset their row to start again. Students may nominate a student if they see an action they feel earns a
star.
Class Behavior System
If our whole class is showing excellent behavior and earns a compliment from myself or any other adult, the students will add a link to their compliment chain. The compliment chain is suspended from the ceiling. When the links hit the floor, then the class will be rewarded with an incentive for their cooperative work!
**All behavior systems do not work with all classes. The teacher reserves the right to change these systems or any of their components at any time throughout the year.**
